Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

DO YOU OFFER CLASSES FOR 6-8 YEAR OLDS?

At this point our acting classes for kids start at age 9.  We've found that's the age when kids are ready to fully work with the method we teach.   We may add classes for younger kids in the future,

MY CHILD IS A BIT TOO YOUNG/OLD FOR ONE OF YOUR CLASSES.  CAN THEY STILL JOIN?

Yes, this isn't usually a problem.  For example, if you have an 8 year old who wants to take acting classes they can join our 9 - 12 group.  Or if you have a 13 year old, they may feel more comfortable staying in the younger group, especially if they have friends in that group.  Please contact us if this is the case.

WHAT AGES DO YOU OFFER THEATRE SUMMER CAMPS FOR?

In 2026 we have one theatre camp for ages 9 - 13.  If you have a child who is a bit outside of that age range we may be able to make accomodations.

CAN MY TEEN JOIN YOUR ADULT ACTING CLASS?

Yes!  We allow teens ages 15 and up to join our adult classes.  Viola Spolin's method allows students of different ages to work together effectively.  Mostly it depends on whether the student is comfortable learning with a group of adults.  When teens have joined our adult classes they have never been out of place!

WHAT DO YOU TEACH?

We teach the work developed by Viola Spolin.  It's an improvisational method that uses specially designed games to teach acting and improv skills.  See our work for more information.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF IMPROVISATION CLASSES?

Beyond gaining the ability to improvise, improv classes help improve presence, confidence, and the ability to adapt.  Play also helps to improve mental and physical wellbeing by regulating the nervous system.

I CAN'T AFFORD YOUR CLASSES.  DO YOU OFFER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE?

Yes, we do.  We do our best to keep our classes affordable (and in fact they are some of the most affordable acting classes in Winnipeg) and if you are in need of financial assistance we allow a certain number of students to pay a discounted rate.  Contact us if you're having difficulty affording our classes.

I'M CURIOUS ABOUT YOUR CLASS.  CAN I COME TO A CLASS AND SEE IF I LIKE IT?

We do occasionally allow students to come to a class and see what it's like.  However, we prefer that you make a commitment to a 6 week session (for adults), or a full semester (for kids) as this method requires some time to be effective.

DO YOU OFFER FREE IMPROV CLASSES?

Yes, we do!  Occasionally we offer by donation improv classes.  Usually these are one offs (a single evening class).  They're a great way to get an introduction to the method we teach and have some fun!

I"M AN ACTOR BUT I'VE NEVER DONE IMPROV BEFORE.  IS YOUR CLASS SUITABLE FOR ME?

Absolutely!  In fact this method is perfect for actors who have never done improv, as it doesn't require you to be fast or clever, but instead develops skills you probably already have to some extent: being connected and present.  Instead of relying upon jokes and making things up, this work gradually builds a scaffolding that you can use to improvise without feeling like you've been thrown off the deep end!

I'VE NEVER DONE ANY ACTING OR IMPROV AT ALL.  IS YOUR CLASS SUITABLE FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS?

Yup!  This work is absolutely suitable for those who have never done any acting before.  It will give you a great introduction to the world of theatre!

IS THERE A LEVEL 1/LEVEL 2?

In our improv and acting classes we don't use the idea of levels.  We find it much more effective for everyone to learn together, both new and returning students.  Everyone is always at a different place in the work, and this allows returning students to get continued work on fundamentals, while also helping new students to learn more quickly.
